Goals we had set to start the restoration
  • PHASE 1: Restore the tower footings
  • PHASE 2: Replace tower steps and landings
  • PHASE 3: Replace tower support cross braces and bolts
  • PHASE 4: Replace tower cabin roof and walls. Improve tower safety where needed.
  • PHASE 5: Sand, scrape, and paint tower where needed.
  • FINAL PHASE: Re-Open the tower to visitors and create an educational program with background information on the tower.

What we found ...
Picture
Water was pooling at the base of the tower eroding the concrete footings
Picture
Portions of the footings had eroded away and needed to be replaced
Picture
Bolts and cross members needed to be replaced
Picture
The galvanized steel structure needed to be sanded and repainted
Picture
Replace the tower's rotted wooden steps and put wire mesh on the handrails to improve visitor safety.
Picture
The landings needed to be replaced in order to make the tower safe for visitors
Picture
The floor of the cabin had been weathering for almost two decades and the walls had been used for "target practice" by vandals. Both needed to be replaced or patched.
Picture
The roof of the cabin needed to be replaced with a new structure as will the cabin's windows.

What we did ...
Picture
We started from the bottom and worked our way up
Picture
We began fundraising to finance the effort
Picture
We looked for sponsors
Picture
We enlisted some help
Picture
We recruited more help
Picture
We kept working upward
Picture
... and we continued to raise awareness for our cause
Picture
Now we are almost there!
